Mendip Mule Pencil Roving Yarn
This is our beautiful new Mendip Mule Pencil Roving yarn - 5 YSW
This yarn is a single ply low twist yarn similar in aspects to an Icelandic Lopi - Lopi meaning “half-spun”
Designed from within our Lustre Flock after our BFL Rams created lots of bonny white Blue Faced Leicester X Lustre lambs that were shorn as shearling in March 2026 - hence the name the Mendip Mule, unique to Fernhill Farm flocks
These fleeces were blade shorn and hand picked to perfection by our wool handlers and selected for beautiful long, soft, curls
We then sent our greasy fibres down to the Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall for a true South West England Fibreshed yarn - returning to us as washed, carded and spun as this beautiful yarn
This lovely yarn will allow you to felt after knitting or crocheting very easily and is extremely soft and fluffy as its supplied oiled on cone, we strongly recommend washing well after finishing in order to brighten the yarn further and to release the fibres to create a fluffier and softer finished product.
The sample shown in the pictures is knitted on 4mm needles and is two strands held together - “this sample was lovely to create I personally loved the feel of the yarn in my hands - Nancy Housego”
For a 550g cone, the meterage for this yarn is 916.6m
Available as samples, balls and cones plus we have a trade option too - all are supplied as unwashed
