Mole Hill - 2/12 YSW - Crumbly Brown Romney Shetland Ewes

from £8.50

YARN CONES 2/12 YSW

Loving our crumbly mid brown yarns from our high performing ewes here on the farm, pre-lamb blade shorn and selected for their mixed tones of fawn, beige, native brown shades that when blended together, offer us a crumbly fleck effect often associated with tweeds

Named as Mole Hill as these cones arrived in Spring 2026 when our many resident moles are most active, tunnelling and crumbling the earth to create their passage ways, stopping only to push up big, beautiful piles of crumbled brown earth, that matches our fibre colours perfectly

We adore our moles here on the farm and delight when folks tell us that we have a ‘mole’ problem - our reply is that they have a mole problem we have always celebrated their presence here on the land.

We marvel at how they work the fields after the cows have been regeneratively mob grazed. Seeing the cows kneel down and rub this freshly uncovered earth, pushing the soil over the ground with their faces, understanding this connection, their love and absolute need to smother their faces with the scent of fresh earth presented to them as nature’s crumbly make-up and perfume - this is pure joy in a field

The most striking observation is watching our new born lambs and ewes nibble at the tops of mole hills, knowing instinctively that the contents within piles of fresh earth is exactly what they need to build their gut biomes - we even bring mole hill soil into our orphan lamb pens when inside the shed and every time, they each divert their attention to smell and taste, nibble and consume the microbes that are behind all our soil minerals on the farm

Mole hills are a constant part of this landscape and as ancient as wool itself and we hope you like our inspiration, making use of all that nature gives to us throughout the centuries here at Fernhill farm

This yarn is a luxury fibre, coming from our favourite flock of Romney Shetlands - born and blade shorn here on the farm, hand graded and selected to be soft and colourful, textured from within the nature that surrounds us

Washed, carded, spun and returned to us via the Natural Fibre Company in Cornwall, who we have been working with since we first started our mission to add value to British Wool - since 2008, we can boast that this is a South West England Fibreshed product

All our land is verified as regenerative via Savory Institute - please see our EOV results and data here:

A completely native shade - 100% natural with no dye added, the crumbly texture comes from genetic selection and our meticulous hand grading skills at shearing, ensuring the colour and final quality of this yarn is maintained from sheep to shop
