Silver Mist 4PLY Yarn in Romney X Shetland shearlings wool

from £7.50

Truly delighted with this edition to our range of yarns - pure new second shear (shearlings*) lambs wool creates a light airy yarn, full of bounce and shimmer from the lustrous long wool Romney breed, with a hint of extra shine from blending some of our own coloured Lustre Flock fleece into this yarn too.

Arriving on one of those typical misty Mendip days, the colours reflected the light, desperate to shine bright here and thus become known as Silver Mist just like the weather.

This 4ply knitting yarn is a single source yarn from our flock of native Romney X Shetlands - fibres originating from our late Spring shorn shearlings - every fleece Blade shorn and hand picked to be just perfect for spinning these yarns.

A base of soft creamy white together with a selection of our Silver grey Lustre Flock fleeces, the lustre created within this yarn would certainly suit over-dying.

The Semo jumper in the first photo is taken from the Wonder of Wool book by Justine Lee released on the 18th August 2025 and available in the best book shops.

This new listing as of the 30th August 2025 includes the appropriate amounts of yarns to suit this pattern sizes, packed in a FREE Fernhill Fibre bag, plus our original wooden button label, and our Fernhill Fibre cotton labels so you can finish your newly knitted jumper with source of origin if you wish to do so.

Below is a link to this fabulous book and some words shared by Justine about Jen at Fernhill Farm creating Fernhill Fibre yarns:

My first meeting with Jen was during 2020 when I was studying for my Masters in Textiles at Chelsea School of art, specialising in sustainability for knitwear and researching into British wool. This was after 30 years working as a knitwear designer in the fashion industry.

It was Jen hunter from Fernhill farm who explained to me the concept of Regenerative farming methods and the benefits for the soil, the plants, wild and farm animals. She sparked my interest in the differences between British sheep breeds' fleece, inspiring me to knit each pure breed to study their wool types. She also enlightened me to the benefits to the fleece quality when the sheep were grass – fed.

Subsequently to my research I have co-written a book called the Wonders of Wool that showcases some of our rare sheep breeds and the diversity and quality of our British sheep’s wool.

It is thanks to Jen and her enthusiasm for a better, more environmentally aware production of wool that led me down this path of Native British Wool knitwear.
