Community Weave Blankets
Community Weave Blankets
The Bristol Weaving Mill is a micro-mill based in the heart of Bristol UK offering a no-boundaries approach to the design, sampling, and manufacture of woven fabrics and soft accessories - as Fernhill Fibre, we have been making blankets in Bristol since the opening of this local mill over a decade ago now
This community weave blanket project started in 2024 with the idea of helping smaller producers who have a few cones of their own yarn around in their store - often not enough to begin any new projects, too beautiful and valuable not to be sued and shared - we fit right into this category and thus, here is the end result of local collaborations
The process involved Bristol Weaving Mill supplying the warp yarn from their own deadstock store cupboard, 100% British wool in both ecru or dark brown warping yarns, both natural un-dyed colours
Each fibre provider sent cones to the mill to create the weft - yarns could be in any quality, colour, and yarn gauge, with a 100% guarantee they we shall get blankets containing their own weft yarn back - 180cm x 210cm on their loom
Sounds simple but I can imagine the time and dedication to lift this project off the ground as its been hugely successful and we can only thank the Bristol Weaving Mill team again, for there fabulous ideas to assist everyone to keep yarn circulating around the local area - if you wish to contact BWM, their contact details are provided here:

Fernhill Fibre Blankets
Double Bed sized blankets - each woven as described above using Fernhill Fibre pure Shetland wool weft in a light blue-grey tone - available in 2 colours whilst stocks last:
Hopsack Ecru Warp
Hopsack Dark Brown Warp - coming soon
Hopsack is a type of weave, often described as basket-like pattern with subtle variations of colours between the warp and weft. The hopsack weave is not too tight, creating a breathable, dense fabric, offering lots of warmth as all great blankets are designed to do - this time, we left the BWM team to use their better skill and judgement to design the pattern and we are delighted with the finish
Adorned with the classic Fernhill Fibre button and cotton label, these limited edition bespoke blankets are available to ship, packaged in our fibre bags ready to give as gifts with meaning, story, collaboration and trust in fibre supplier and local weaving mill
