BEST OF THE BRITISH SIX

Word cannot describe the joy we have in adding this yarn into our collection - this particular fibre has been growing regeneratively in our green grassy fields for the last decade, when we first added the Teeswater ram into our Pure Shetland flock. This created our Smashem as a beginning to our crossbred ewe genetics, stronger than a pure bred with their delicate tendencies, our Lustre long wool flock originated from Shetland ewes with a Teeswater Ram.

We than added a colourful BFL Ram to cover these half-bred ewes and also pure Shetlands too. The BFL Shetland ewes was born as a finer, smaller half-bred ewe, offering different fibre qualities alongside our Smashem.

Over time, our speciality fibre flock gradually multiplied with the added genetic addition of a Rasta Ram in the form a coloured Leicester Long Wool and dark Wensleydale rams, and thus the length and lustre has been developing itself naturally to grow fine, colourful, curly locks like you just don’t see from a commercial ewe here on the Mendip Hills in the UK.

Specifically, this flock are 100% grass-fed, only come into the shed for shearing or difficult lambing issues which are extremely rare as these girls are so naturally hardy. Their characters are a reflection of their curly wool types, a bit bonkers with long legs like their wool, happy and bouncy and demanding our attention as they are very observant and vocal about their needs, which we feel demonstrates their unique nicheness being just 0.01% of the global sheep population.

The Best of the British six comes from adding coloured Romney rams over this mix of genetic diversity and the results are just WOW … their wool is something we never believed possible to achieve and the most important aspect of this Fernhill Fibre Farm creation, is their happiness in themselves as sheep living naturally on this land.

Their meat is also lean and mature with nutrient density unlike any young lamb meat dish can offer, and this is the flock that offers mutton for our Mutton Club suppers - a social dining experience on a winters night where we celebrate togetherness in its simplest, prehistoric manor.

Finally - sheepskins from this flock are just not in the shop long enough to list as they fly off the shelves with their long lustrous curls. They are a delightful reminder of the true offerings sheep give to us as Human beings and that our holistic approach is the very best method of living regeneratively within our struggling planet.

A spinner commented - “it feels like merino”, but its local, not imported from across the globe and verified as regenerative by the Savory Institute and available on the Land to Market Platform as we continue to manage the land according to biodiversity developments and the ability to capture this information and share with the world.

This yarn is the best we can ever achieve and it is so soft to the touch, just like the babies when they arrive and we get to see native colour and patterns emerge from allowing genetic diversity to thrive.

Spun by Laxtons from worsted tops as each fibre is selected to be 10cm +

We are now making socks and beanies from this yarn so watch this space for more luxurious products and do get in touch about wholesale orders thanks jen@fernhill-farm.co.uk
